I last read this book in the late 80s or early 90s and loved it, a re-read has still been enjoyable but not enough that I feel the need to move onto others is the series, there are more compelling reads out there. Very thinly disguised Tolkeinesque story, I presume it started as a way of avoiding royalties.
That said this series makes a great teenager fantasy story.
